A Fond Farewell

A farewell note from Barbara Stiles, CPSM:

With less than 12 hours left in my term as chapter president, I want to take a few minutes to say thank you to all the Central Florida chapter members. This has been a fantastic journey and I am so glad that we all took it together. A year ago, this moment seemed a very distant future, but it arrived all too quickly.

We have had a very successful year and it could not have happened without all of the hard work of the board of directors. These are the folks that really make this chapter run smoothly. They work hard every day for their firms and for SMPS Central Florida. Each of you has my gratitude and thanks for every moment you spent with SMPS this year.

I am looking forward to the next program year of SMPS Central Florida. You will be led by an innovative and energetic president, Melannie Wright. There are many new programs and activities in the works. You won’t want to miss any of them.

Don’t forget that the SMPS National Conference, Build Business 2013, will be in Orlando next summer. Save the dates of July 31-August 2!

It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as your president. Let’s all work together to make next year the best ever!

A Celebration to Remember

SMPS Central Florida’s 30th Anniversary and Awards Celebration was a great success with many industry professionals gathering to celebrate the milestone. Barbara Stiles, president of the 2011-2012 SMPS Central Florida board, started the evening off with a few quick words of appreciation and introduced the first special guest from the SMPS national board, Holly Bolton. Holly is Director of Marketing at CE Solutions, a structural engineering and marketing communications consulting services firm in Carmel, Ind., and is the 2011-2013 Chapter Delegate for the national Board of Directors. Holly’s address was fun and made references back to the 80s which brought back great memories for many!

After recognizing the accomplishments of last year’s board, Barbi passed the torch to Melannie Wright, SMPS Central Florida’s 2012-2013 board president. Melannie then had the honor of introducing the master of ceremonies for the night: award-winning journalist and WESH 2 News anchor Jim Payne. Jim took us on a stroll down memory lane with a few anecdotes and a short video showcasing some of Central Florida’s top news stories… does anyone remember Delilah?

Numerous companies and individuals received awards and recognition throughout the night. Here is a recap in case you missed it:

Marketer of the Year: Adrian Share with HNTB Corporation
Adrian has 30 years of experience in the transportation industry. He has been instrumental in bridging the gap between consultants and clients. Within his firm, he leads efforts associated with winning new business and developing relationship building strategies. He is well-known and respected within the A/E/C industry and is often asked to speak at various industry events, including SMPS. He also volunteers his time to several local organizations including the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers, American Public Transit Association and the Design-Build Institute of America. In addition, he remains committed to his technical and marketing staff by investing in their personal and professional growth. He continuously serves as a mentor, providing guidance in understanding the marketplace and the clients.

Rising Star Award: Mary Gainor with Hardin Construction Company
Mary quickly committed to the chapter by becoming a Co-Director of the Communications committee within a few months of joining SMPS. She brought her social media savvy and experience to the board and implemented our chapter’s first social media program, which includes Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and a blog. She also filled a design void on the committee and used her graphic skills to create flyers and additional materials for the newsletter and social media campaign. And, she did all this while planning a wedding and getting married this past March.

Shining Star Award: Kari Nemiro with Tetra Tech
Kari was instrumental in the planning and execution of this year’s Coordinator’s Club events. This year’s programming was the most successful the chapter has ever had for Coordinator’s Club. In addition, she volunteered to assist other committees with various events and programs, including hosting webinars in her office. If that wasn’t enough, she also served on a subcommittee for the Amazing Race educational series. She managed all of the logistics with the venue and often stepped up to help with others areas without being asked.

Member of the Year: Maggie Chaffin with HKS Architects, Inc
Maggie has been a member of SMPS since 2001 and during that time has served on the Board of Directors for six years in various roles. She has shown extraordinary commitment to the chapter throughout her membership but especially when she volunteered to continue serving the chapter as Treasurer for a second year. This dedication ensured that our chapter’s events and other business continued uninterrupted. She stepped up in order to maintain the financial stability of the chapter.

Congratulations to all the award winners and thank you to all who helped celebrate this milestone anniversary with us and recognizing the amazing talent of our fellow firms in the industry. SMPS appreciates your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at our next event!

Another big thank you to our sponsors: Jacobs Engineering Group, Triangle Reprographics, Barton Malow Company, Harper-Limbach, BRPH, JCR Consulting, TLC Engineering for Architecture, Welbro Building Corp and England-Thims & Miller.

Marketing 101: Elements of Design

Check out this helpful infographic from paper-leaf.com.

“The Elements of Design are the components or parts of a work of art or design. More simply put, they are the ingredients of art. Take one part color, a pinch of texture, and a whole lot of shape, and voila: you have art! Recipes may vary, but all works of art and design contain a combination of the following: line, shape (and form), value, color, space, and texture.”
